2024
NEW YORK 1855 STATE CENSUS
Matt Putnam loves to dig up info
and he did this 1855 State and all I did was get it and do a teeny bit of
editing. This was an ongoing project started in February 2021 and finished up
in 6 weeks. He did a great job. The 1855 is a bit sketchy as large
parts of the 1855 census were lost forever in a horrific fire at the New York
State Archives in 1911. The stuff that survived were the pages that Counties
somehow still had copies of. Even the counties that technically
"survived" have many towns missing. 12 Counties were completely lost.
They were: Suffolk, Queens, Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess, Clinton, Hamilton,
Saint Lawrence, Tompkins, Seneca, Wyoming and Genesee. And then some of the
Counties like Montgomery, Fulton, Schenectady, and nearby ones in 1855 and most
other years had little if any New England Putnams and were dominated by the
Dutch Poutman/Putman families. I drove through Schenectady once
back in 1852 in my new horse drawn SUV heading over to Rochester and noticed
for the first time that there was a huge sign just as you entered the County.
The sign Said:
“DUTCH FOLKS ONLY
NO ENGLISH NEED APPLY!”
ANNA PUTNAM Albany, Ward 8, Albany County
Anna is 3 NJ and is listed as a grandchild to John Milington 68 Born in England. Also, there is John’s wife Myra 68 Born in England and her son James 32 Born in England. Looks like John and Myra had a daughter who married a Putnam (or Putman) and left an orphaned granddaughter Anna. No ideas here.

become Erie County, New York. That’s just a guess though folks so don’t go

PUTMANS in Montgomery County
The families
here are about all Dutch, descended from Johannes Putman (originally Poutman or Pootman) of Albany,
unless I specify something else. Most all the middle names indicate who their
father was. This tradition goes back to the European roots. Most all the
lineages were given back in 1850 when we could first see names and ages and
all.

POLLY PUTNAM & FRANCIS
PUTNAM Canajoharie, Montgomery County
Polly is 61 CT,
her widowed sister Fanny Day is 51 CT and widowed brother Francis is 58 CT.
They are written down as Putmans but they are members of the New England Putnam
family. They are the children of Francis Putnam and Anna Scripture and have
been living here for 30 years. If you look closely at Polly it looks like the
census taker wrote down Otsego Ӡ and then wrote Connecticut Ӡ over it. Francis
Putnam was living in Otsego County in 1800 and 1810. Francis is definitely the
son of Francis Putnam # 796 who was here in the late 1800s until he died in the
1820s. Polly or Mary is probably his sister. Both were born in Connecticut in
the 1790s when Francis Senior must have been down there. Matt Putnam found this
entry in a 1855 State census that Polly was 61 CT and
Francis Putnam (a widower) 58 CT was her brother and Fanny Day 51 CT was her
sister. All had lived here 30 years. They are here in 1860. New England family!

him. In 1860 that Aaron is back with his folks in Mohawk at age 22 and there is
his sister Margaret age 24 next to him. What if this is just a bro and sis

County, he could be a member of the Dutch Putman family. He will enlist in the
7th cavalry here on October 7, 1862 and spelled the name still as
Putnam as he did in 1860, so may be New Englander.
MARY PUTMAN Richland, Oswego County

here in Exeter for 2 years. Peter and family were in Columbia, Herkimer County,
New York in 1850 and will in Springfield, Otsego County in 1860. He may be the
son of Johannes Putman and Maria ‘Molly’ Sager who had a son Peter christened
on 22 Jan. 1814 in Herkimer. That would match perfectly with this Peter.
Problem is that everyone thinks that the Peter who is the son of Johannes and
Polly married Patience Godfrey and is out in LaSalle County Illinois right now
and will be in Wright County Minnesota in 1860. So
we’re not really sure about this Peter.

earlier marriage and her maiden name may have been Church. Her mother Julia
Church can be found in the 1850 census in Dalton, Berkshire Massachusetts and
Mary is there listed as Mary P. Church 16 MA. Maybe Putman (Putnam) is Mary’s
middle name and the census take made a mistake.
BARNHART PUTMAN Salt Lake, Rensselaer County
